U.S. ARMY 120TH SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 120th Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly referred to as a “unit crest” or a DUI, was originally approved for the 240th Engineer Group on 23 December 1971. It was redesignated for the 120th Support Group on 1 September 2008.

A Philippine sunburst forms the top half of the shield portion of the insignia and commemorates the organization’s four campaigns in the Pacific Theater during World War II, as well as the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation the unit was awarded for service in the Luzon campaign (it also earned an Arrowhead device for taking part in an assault landing during that campaign). A blue fleur-de-lis celebrates the six campaigns the unit fought in France during World War I.

The blue area in the lower part of the shield, along with the two pine branches, alludes to the unit’s HQ located at Waterville, Maine on the Kennebec River. A masoned recalls the organization’s former missions of Engineer planning and design that were needed when carrying out field construction. The unit motto, “Develop Design Direct” also pays a nod to the unit’s former service as the 240th Engineer Group.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Now known as the 120th Regional Support Group, the 120th Support Group’s origins stretch back to June 1880 and the organization of Company H, 2nd Infantry Regiment in the Maine Volunteer Militia at Waterville. In August 2017, the Company was reorganized and redesignated as Company H, 103rd Infantry after being called into Federal service four months earlier; it would undergo seven more redesignations, primarily as Infantry but also several time as Armor, before receiving its current designation on 1 September 2008.

Since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the Group has been deployed overseas on at least two occasions, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its first tour in 2006-2007; the unit’s campaign participation record in the War on Terrorism has yet to be determined. Most recently, it spent ten months deployed in Poland (2022 - 2023) in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, returning home in March 2023.

As of Summer 2023, the 120th Regional Support Group is headquartered in Bangor, Maine and has two subordinate units, the 521st Troop Command Battalion and the 286th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.
